Amazon.com automates legal documents with DealBuilder

Amazon.com, the leading online retailer has deployed DealBuilder to enhance the creation and management of contract documents within its legal European legal operations. In the first phase of the project Amazon has automated a family of employment contracts and documents to enable staff to create up to date and compliant documents.

DealBuilder helps organisations generate legal contracts and other complex documents in a new way, by presenting them as easy to use, web-based questionnaires. When the questionnaire is complete DealBuilder automatically builds the required documents. Automating the production of documents saves organisations time and expense, whilst helping them to eliminate legal and commercial risk. DealBuilder enables company lawyers to automate and pre-approve contracts of any size and complexity without the time consuming macro, template or XML programming required by legacy document assembly tools. In addition to generating and managing documents, the system can pass the contract specific data to and from corporate databases.

Commenting on the project, Michael Miller, Amazon’s UK Legal Director and Associate General Counsel said: “With automated drafting we can safely devolve the creation of relatively standardised legal documents to the business and at the same time offer them a more efficient, faster service. It also means that my department’s legal resources are freed up to concentrate on the non-standard exceptions and more complex work. I see this as a first stage deployment of DealBuilder and I am excited about the prospect of deploying DealBuilder more broadly within our operations, with a view also to integrating DealBuilder with the corporate Peoplesoft (TM) HR system.

The Amazon project is a further milestone in Business Integrity’s recent expansion into the corporate legal sector, where the company has already won notable clients such as Cisco Systems and Microsoft.

Tim Allen, Managing Director at Business Integrity said “Amazon’s choice of DealBuilder is another important step in establishing legal document and contract automation as a ‘must have’ tool for company lawyers. We are proud to welcome them to our growing community of blue chip clients".
